The S-MODE Pilot campaign took place in the California Current from October 19 through November 9, with a ship, a fleet of robotic assets and two aircraft. Our saildrone sampling during this campaign was a success: we collected 90GB worth of data with 5 saildrones that criss-crossed submesoscale fronts and filaments. And we sailed the vehicles in submesoscale “quincunx” formation (five-side of dice) for 24 hours through an intense lateral shear region.
